Six horses made their way out onto the dirt track at Green Horse Fields. They didn’t exactly have a lot of color variation, five bays and a grey filly. However, what they lacked in color variation they made up for in personality. One of the bay’s by the name of Speedy was tugging on the reins and swishing his tail wildly, he had to be in front of everyone or they were going to have problems. Dive kicked her heels into the air and danced around with a loud squeal of excitement, she exulted in her strength and the feeling of the dirt beneath her hooves. Matty pranced along much like a dressage horse and was attempting to press Honor’s buttons and he was succeeding, he’d get too close for her liking and she’d squeal and lash out at him. Her eyes burned holes through him as Aaron reined her in. The fiery grey filly had been riddled with last place finishes as of late and her attitude seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. After some thought she’d acquired blinkers with hopes that it may possibly help her focus in on things a bit more so she wasn’t so obsessed with obliterating the horses around her.
Dia was flexing and flashing sudden bursts of speed, her flawless body looked to be in great shape and she was ready to make her debut. She’d be the last of Grayson Meadows’ two year olds to make their start and the hopes for her were high.
Ness was in the back with owner Tanner Grayson, he didn’t ride much with the group but Aaron had talked him into it as Ness was a relatively easy going horse and she was one of his favorites around the barn. She looked like she was falling asleep as she cantered along the track for her warm-up, but he knew she was really putting her game face on. She’d already racked up one win this season and she looked to be improving off of that. Ness was bought more for her prospect as a broodmare and pedigree but she still seemed to want to run so they’d kept her on the track and it looked like that was a rather smart decision.
They all approached the gate and Speedy was the first to go in, Dive and Matty followed with Honor taking the four spot, Ness and Dia took the five and six spot and they were all in line for the start. Speedy threw his head and flared his nostrils, he was dying to get out and run his legs off. Honor stomped around and Aaron gripped some of her main in her hands, she really was something Honor, and everyone knew she could be a seriously dangerous horse this year if she could find her right stride.
The gates opened and Speedy shot from them like a rocket easily putting himself at least a length ahead of everyone. Honor followed suit and easily ran along with no one but herself for company. The rest of the group were closers so there was a gap of another length back to Divie, Matty, Dia, and Ness brought up the rear. Speedy was running wild out on the lead enjoying not being pressed by anyone and falling into a nice speed with Hadley piloting him. Honor followed with her ears pricked and interested, she seemed rather focused, the blinkers did seem to help. Her dappled coat danced with every stride she took. She really was a rather pretty filly, and it was a little unusual to see a horse as young as her with a full blown dappled coat.
Divie and Matty seemed to hook up and were keeping each other true to themselves, Dia and Ness lolled along at the back of the pack, both were perfectly content with their spot and quite enjoyed being coated in dirt.
The backstretch was already ending and they were into the final turn, Honor was rounding to Speedy’s outside and was beginning to gain momentum and take him head on at the top of the stretch. Divie and Matty were making their moves and closing the two length gap to a half a length gap with Ness and Dia hot on their heels. Honor tugged hard on the reins and she was full of run, Aaron was a bit surprised by it but she held the filly back and it was no easy task. Divie was on her outside and Matty was edging up on the outside of Divie. The stretch opened up and Aaron shook the reins and Honor exploded, her long legs left dirt in her wake and Divie and Matty gave chase, they were right at her rump with Ness closing quickly on the outside Speedy and Dia dueled behind them and in the end everyone was separated by noses and whiskers. Divie had taken it by a nose, Matty was second with Honor breathing down his neck and Ness was 4th by a nose Speedy had gotten up for 5th but just barely Dia had given him quite the run for his money.
